The debate between leasing and buying credit card machines is a hot one. One thing a merchant must remember is that leasing is either “renting” or “financing” that piece of equipment. Businesses often look at leasing as a viable alternative to purchasing equipment. This is done because of the principal of the Time Value Of Money.

Before we explain the Time Value Of Money, lets look at the alternate view point. It is true that not many small businesses can foot the bill for a $15,000 color copier, so instead they will lease it. But for a $500 credit card machine is that wise? The arguement goes like this. Most terminal leases involve a 48 month term, and at least $20 a month. That totals $960 in payments! If you buy this same terminal for $500 and charge it to a credit card, you could easily pay that off.

What is a Merchant Account?

Merchant accounts aren’t the same as ordinary bank accounts even though some ordinary banks provide them. However, most of these ordinary banks are resellers and not the organization that actually provides the service. That company is called the processor. A merchant account allows a business to accept credit cards as payment for goods and services. In a way, merchant accounts act as a contract between the business owner and the company providing the service.

When your application for a merchant account is being considered, two entities within the processor participate-an ISO (Independent Service Organization) and an underwriter. Usually the ISO also serves as the underwriter. The ISO evaluates the future success and risk of the merchant applicant and approves or denies an account. If the merchant violates the terms of the merchant account agreement, the underwriter/ISO will shut down the account.

There are two different kinds of merchant accounts available, the “Over-the-counter” (OTC) and the “money-order/telephone-order” (MOTO). Over-the-counter merchant accounts are used primarily for retail merchants. These types of merchant accounts typically have lower discount rates and transaction fees because the customers’ credit cards are physically present at the point of transaction.

Money order/ telephone order merchant accounts are used primarily for Internet-based businesses. The transaction requires two steps instead of one. Once all of the card information is entered, the data is verified and then the money is subtracted from the cardholder’s limit and placed in a 30-day holding account without actually charging the card. After the product is shipped the card is charged for the purchase price.
